Santeri Lehto, LIFESTYLE, 2023

HOW TO START A FIRE is a group exhibition, curated by Anni Porrasmäki, featuring the works of eleven artists who work across photography, printmaking, painting, installation, film, drawing, and sculpture. The name of the exhibition, born from a recurring thought during the curator’s darkest times after falling seriously ill, signifies a quest for a spark and purpose amidst growing uncertainty.

Like fire, a person lives, pulsates with the beat of existence, and eventually extinguishes. How to create an unbreakable bond in a destructive world?

The artists delve into the interplay between creation and destruction, serving as reflections on processes of grief, loss, alienation, resilience, and nostalgia.

HOW TO START A FIRE extends beyond its literal meaning; it becomes a metaphor for light-making and rebellion against the backdrop of both personal and global catastrophes. The focus shifts to reflecting on hopelessness and its possibilities, embracing radical acceptance.

And how to start a fire without causing destruction?
